Brāļu kapsēta “The National Military Cemetery of Riga”

The Brāļu kapsēta “The National Military Cemetery of Riga” is the last resting place of more than a thousand “Latvian” soldiers and officers. The cemetery is a memorial to and burial ground for thousands of Latvian soldiers who were killed between 1915 and 1920 in World War I, during World War II and the Latvian War of Independence. It was built as an integrated combination of sculpture and landscaping between 1924 and 1936, to designs by the sculptor Kārlis Zāle, many of whose sculptures feature prominently, by the architects P. Feders, A. Birzenieks, P. Kundziņš, the landscape gardener Andrejs Zeidaks, the sculptors J. Cirulis and F. Valdmanis and others.

Lestenes Brāļu kapsēta “Lestene Warriors’ Cemetery”

The Lestenes Brāļu kapsēta “Lestene Warriors’ Cemetery” located in the Village of Lestene Latvia. Lestene is a village in Tukums region in Kurzeme “Western part of Latvia”. Its name was inscribed in history by the Second World War when severe battles took place in Lestene and its vicinities. In 1940 Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union and during only one year about 34,000 inhabitants of Latvia perished, were either shot down, tortured, deported to Siberia. When in 1943 Latvian Legion was founded for Latvians it was the only possibility to fight against the return of the communist totalitarian regime. 14600 Latvians fought in the Latvian Legion. In the autumn of 1944, Latvia for the second time was occupied by the Soviet Union except for Kurzeme, called at the time “The Kurzeme Fortress” and defended by legionaries form the 19 Division of the Latvian Legion. German World War II Memorial in 2 Meža kapsēta

The German World War II Memorial located in 2 Meža kapsēta Riga Latvia. Between 1941 and 1944, 6,600 German soldiers were buried on this location. After the war, the war cemetery was reused as a civilian cemetery. To commemorate the German soldiers who are still buried here, a memorial was built in the civil cemetery. It contains in a book the names of those buried here. Their names are also written on columns in the Beberbeki War Cemetery

German World War II Latvia Cemetery

The German World War II Latvia Cemetery – Beberbeki Latvia located just outside Beberbeki in the middle of the forest this German War Cemetery. It is used to bring together the graves of the surrounding regions. There are now 2,427 graves in this cemetery. The names of 6,600 German soldiers who were buried in Riga but whose graves are covered with a civilian cemetery “2 Maza kapsēta” are written on columns. Also the names of 1200 POW’s who died are written on separate columns. The location of their graves is unknown.

Come join “TheCelotājs” and Liepāja Tours take a stroll through the Riga Pumpkin Fair on Doma Square and the numerous different vendors selling their wares. You can find foods of all kinds, bakery products, bread, rolls, cheeses, cookies, candy, fish, wooden products of different types, handcrafted jewelry of all kinds, furs of different styles, pottery of different types, fruits and vegetables, clothing of different types and hand knitted products, honey in jars, candles of different styles and scents, wicker ware and more. You will even find a huge vegetable monument or what ever one may want to call it. And even a great pumpkin dressed in its fineness. We even came across father monk dressed in his finest robe. The Saeima Building Interior

As we enter the Saeima building from Jēkaba iela you will be meet by the building security that will check to see that you are on a list of people who has a reason to be there. Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours excursion to the southern part of Liepāja Old Town then to a part of Liepāja New Town where we see the Liepāja Metalurgs Museum and some other older structures. We will then move back to Liepāja Old Town and were we can get a much better view of Liepāja Amber Clock. Lake Liepāja

Lake Liepāja “Latvian: Liepājas ezers” the fifth-largest lake in Latvia, located near Liepāja in Liepāja district. Total area of the lake - 37,15 km2, length 16.2 km, average depth 2.0 m, coastal line length 44.6 km. Lake Liepāja is a pod-shaped shallow eutrophic coastal lake with extensive areas of emergent vegetation “Phragmites, Typha, Scirpus, Sparganium”, surrounded by seasonally flooded meadows and arable land. Polders and dams enclose most of the wetland area. In the lake are found 14 species of fish pike, roach, perch, bream, crucian carp, tench, eel, vimba, burbot, carp, zander, smelt, bitterling and rudd. In May only licensed fishing is allowed. Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours excursion of the east part of Liepāja Old Town were we will find exampled of more old and poorly maintained structures of wooden brick and concrete. Mixed among all these structures one will see well maintained structures that have been remodeled or are new. There are even some that have been started, but never finished due to lack of money to complete due to the economy. With a 14% unemployment rate, one can see why the area is in the shape it is in. Moving on, we can see a twisted tree trunk. As we walk along, we can by a Liepāja remodeled school building. As we move on, we see more examples of both old and newer structures. One will see old structures next to new or remodeled ones, some have large yards where others only have a foot or two, but they are well maintained. Some of the streets are paved while others are only hard packed dirt. Some have sidewalks curbs and gutters while others are lucky to even have paved streets. So

Līva “German: Lyva, Lyua, Libau” was a famous river in Kurzeme in today Latvia. It was located between the Baltic Sea and Lake Liepāja and had a length about 6 kilometers and a width near the mouth about 50 meters. Monument to Mirdza Kempe

N56.50627, E021.00016 -- Mirdza Ķempe “real surname Naikovska, Russian: Найковская” “9 February [O.S. 27 January] 1907, Liepāja - 12 April 1974, Riga” was a noted Latvian poet and translator. Mirdza Ķempe was born into a working class family in Liepāja, Latvia. From 1914 to 1926 she lived in Tosmare at Ģen. Baloža st., 47; later she and her family lived at Bernatu iela 41 in Liepāja. In 1915-1919 she studied at the 1st Liepāja primary school “now the 5th Liepāja school”. Ķempe graduated from the 1st Liepāja secondary school in 1925. Her first verse "Ne jums!" was published in the "Kurzemes Vārds" newspaper in 1923. In the same year she translated Pushkin's Mozart and Salieri into the Latvian language. Liepāja Under the Regimes Occupation Museum

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Liepāja Under the Regimes of Occupation “Liepāja okupaciju rezimos” museum located at Klāva Ukstina 7 / 9 Liepāja Under the Regimes of Occupation “Liepāja okupaciju rezimos” not unlike the one in Riga, although on a much smaller scale, this museum traces the bloody history of both the Soviet and Nazi occupation of Latvia and the direct effect on Liepāja. Exhibits illustrate how the Soviets ‘held elections’ which included only one party, the communist party, and how attempts by local Latvians to create an opposition ballot only led to a swift death. It also shows the genocide committed against the Jewish population, the deportations of Latvians to Siberia and, later, the creation of the independence movement in the 1980s. Sadly the exhibits aren’t available yet in English. Soviet gulag survivors meet upstairs.

View of Liepāja from Liepāja Holy Trinity Lutheran Cathedral

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to Liepāja Holy Trinity Lutheran Cathedral and a breath taking view of the City of Liepāja from its bell tower, which is the highest point in Liepāja. In 1865–1866, the building underwent its first major reconstruction the original draft tower was raised on the two upper floors to almost 55 meters high. In 1906, the church installed a clock mechanism. As we climb the 137 wooden steps, that dates back to 1865–1866, inside the bell tower leading to the top floor and the door leading to the balcony that in circles the outside the bell tower.

House of Peter the 1st “Pētera I namiņš”

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the House of Peter the 1st “Pēteris I namiņš” ANNO 1697, the oldest house in Liepāja located at Kungu iela 24. Not only is this charming house is one of Liepāja’s oldest buildings, it also has the distinction of having hosted the Russian tsar on his trip to Western Europe in 1697. Coincidentally, the historic house is across the street from “Kungu 26 / Bāriņu 33” that now houses a weavers’ workshop was built only two years later and served as accommodation for King Charles XII of Sweden, the tsar’s rival during the Great Northern War “1699 – 1721”. This wooden house has small paned windows and is opposite the junction at Kungu iela 24. In the 17th century it was a hotel run by Madam Hoyer, where the Russian Tsar Peter stayed in 1697. Rundāle Palace in September 2011 Part II

Rundāle Palace is one of the most outstanding monuments of Baroque and Rococo art in Latvia. The Duchy of Courland-Semigallia, a vassal state of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, was founded in 1561 and it existed until 1795. In 1737 Ernst Johann Biron, a landlord in Courland and favorite of the Russian Empress Anna Ioannovna, became the Duke of Courland-Semigallia. The Italian architect Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli designed Rundāle Palace and supervised construction work. After the death of Empress Anna Ioannovna, the Duke was arrested and sent to exile in Russia. Rundāle Palace in September 2011 Part I

Come join Liepāja Tours and “TheCeļotājs” visit to the Rundāle Palace located outside the village of Pilsrundāle, Rundāles novads Latvia. Rundāle Palace “Latvian: Rundāles pils; German: Schloss Ruhental, formerly also Ruhenthal and Ruhendahl” is one of the two major baroque palaces built in the 18th century for the Dukes of Courland in what is now Latvia, the other being Jelgava Palace. It is situated at Pilsrundāle, 12 km west of Bauska. It was constructed in the 1730s to the design of Architect: Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelli as a summer residence of Ernst Johann von Biron, the Duke of Courland. Following Biron's fall from grace, the palace stood empty until the 1760s, when Rastrelli returned to complete its interior decoration.

When in 1943 Latvian Legion was founded for Latvians it was the only possibility to fight against the return of the communist totalitarian regime. 14600 Latvians fought in the Latvian Legion. In the autumn of 1944, Latvia for the second time was occupied by the Soviet Union except for Kurzeme, called at the time “The Kurzeme Fortress” and defended by legionaries form the 19 Division of the Latvian Legion.

Liepāja Women’s Prison

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Liepāja Women’s Prison located on the corner of Ganību iela and Dārza iela which was the former site where Jews were held before being taken to a remote location and then murdered. On the night of 13 December, Latvian police forces began to arrest Liepāja’s Jews not yet concentrated in the ghetto. The victims were brought to the Women’s Prison, where Jews of all ages were crammed into the courtyard. The Jews were ordered to stand with their faces towards the wall, and warned not to move or look around for relatives or at the watchmen. Some were transported to Šķēde on the evening of the following day and crowded into a barn “a wooden structure, described also as a garage”.

Monument to the Sailors and Fishermen lost at Sea

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Monument to the sailors and Fishermen lost at Sea “Latvian: Piemineklis bojā gājušajiem jūrniekiem un zvejniekiem” located at the west end of Kurmajas prospects and at the Baltic Sea coastline just off the beach is a notable modern monument and sightseeing place in Liepāja, Latvia. The monument was built in 1977 by architect Gunārs Asaris and sculptor Alberts Terpilovskis with funding from LBORF and the fishing kolhoz Boļševiks. The monument is located on the shore of the Baltic Sea in the Liepāja seaside park, at the end of Kūrmājas Prospect. The monument consists of a bronze figure of the woman on 11 meter high V-shaped pedestal, sheathed by Saaremaa dolomite.

Šķēde Dunes and the Jewish and Russian Memorials

Šķēde Dunes – Site of the 1941 Mass Murders and its Memorials

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to Šķēde dunes which was one of the mass murder sites during 1941–1942. Located to the entrance to the Šķēde dunes, we will see a memorial to the 3000 non Jews of the 7500 that were murdered in the dunes. Located in the grassy area is the Jewish Memorial to the Jews that were murdered in the Šķēde dunes and there is the Soviet Unions Memorial to those murdered along the dunes location. The murders in the dunes at Šķēde on the Baltic shore, some fifteen kilometers north of the city and about a kilometer from the road towards the sea, began as early as July 1941. Some 200 Jews were murdered there. During a three-day massacre on 15-17 December 1941, German and Latvian units killed 2,749 Jews, more than half of Liepāja’s Jewish population. In the beginning of the 20th century, Liepāja “Libava” Fortress was the most expensive and ambiguous project of the Russian army on the Baltic Sea. The fortification system bordered the entire city. This massive concrete fortification with eight cannon batteries was built to protect the city and its population from German attacks. Northern Breakwaters of Karosta Area

This 1800 meter long and 7.35 meter wide breakwater is bolstered with concrete tripods along its northern side to decrease the impact force of waves. From the pier you can take an exciting look at the Liepaja harbor. The breakwater offers a lovely place for perambulations, as well as an opportunity to observe the Baltic Sea. To the South of the breakwater you will find a fine view of the Liepāja Freeport and its system of breakwaters. To the East is the unique Karosta area, while to the North, there are the remnants of the Northern Forts.

Liepāja Oskara Kalpaka tilts

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to one of the oldest Latvian and Liepāja metal bridges built in 1906, a technical monument. Bridge designed by French engineer Alexander Gustave Eiffel designs. Located between Liepāja New Town and Karosta crossing the Karostas kanals and Atmodas bulvāris It consists of two identical cropped farms, which are turned by 90 degrees each on its side. Excision of the bridge was designed by an electric winch aid and takes 4-5 minutes to open. Over the life of the bridge it has been seriously damaged several times. Saint Nicholas Orthodox Maritime Cathedral

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Saint Nicholas Orthodox Maritime Cathedral “Svētais Nikolaja pareizticīgo jūras katedrāle”, Located at Katedrāles iela 1 Karosta, Liepāja Latvia. This monumental symbol of both the Orthodox Church and the tsarist monarchy must have been at odds with communist doctrine and no doubt a thorn in the side of the party devout. Finished in 1903 and christened by Nicholas II himself, it served as the garrison’s church much as it did during the Latvian period. The Soviets however used it as a warehouse, gymnasium and meeting hall. Today it is once again an Orthodox house of worship and an architectural wonder in a sea of concrete mediocrity.

Liepāja Amber Clock

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Liepāja Amber Clock located at the north end of Hotel Promenade and along the Promenade “Canal”. Liepāja, Amber clock and beads In 2003 during the celebration of the 750th anniversary of the Liva village, which was the start of Liepāja, the citizens and the visitors of the city donated pieces of amber of various size more than 50 liters of amber were collected! The bigger pieces were threaded into 123 m long beads and the rest were used for making a 4 meter tall sun dial, which was erected on the promenade along the Tirdniecibas canal. The amber beads are exhibited at the Liepaja craftsmen’s association Barinu iela, Liepaja, phone +371 34 23286, open daily except on Saturdays and Sundays.

Raiņa Park

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to Raiņa Park located between Brīvības iela and Zemnieka iela in Liepāja New Town. It is a large grassy tree filled area. At the north end of the park is the monument to those Latvian and Russian POWs who were massacred there in July 1941 by the invading Nazi Army and buried in the Red Army tank traps and later dug up and reburied in the Jewish Cemetery located in the south end of Līvas kapsēta “Cemetery” Liepaja Old Town.

Liepāja Old Fishermen Museum

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Liepāja Old Fishermen Museum located at the west end of the port on Vecā ostmala and standing alone in the middle of the pier area is a single brick mason covered build were one can find the Liepāja Old Fishermen Museum. As we enter the main and only entrance to the Liepāja Old Fishermen Museum one will see old fishing gear, nets, straw reed netting fishing traps, there is even an old dugout canoe. As we walk through the museum we can see an example of an 18th century wooden setting. Moving on, we can see a model of a woman repairing fishing net. We can see another example of fishing traps and nets. Located in the center of the room you will see examples of old oil lanterns, there is also models of fishing trawler. Also located on the table is an example of a old Livs Village.

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to Tramvaja tilts “Tram Bridge” and a view of Liepāja and Tirdzniecibas kanals “Sales Canal” and its sea port. As we stand on the east side of Tram Bridge looking northeast and panning from the left to the right we see the canal concrete wall and a full view of the canal. Panning to the right, we see the rear of Hotel Libava to the south view of the canal and its concrete wall. Moving to the west side of the Tram Bridge, we will see the south end of the bridge. Panning to the right we will see the south side if the canal and its concrete wall and boat docks. As we pan to the right we can see the rear of the Swedbank and Hotel Promenade, which was a former warehouse remodeled into its present state and hotel. Panning further to the right we see a full view of the western part of the canal and the ports. Panning all the way to the right, we can see the north end of the Tram Bridge.

Promenade along the Canal

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Promenade along the Canal located along the Tirdzniecības kanāls “Canal. Liepājnieki “people from Liepāja” are quick to point out that this beautiful walkway along the canal was once off limits during Soviet times. Perhaps the temptation to set sail for Sweden frightened the local party bosses. Today, you can take a stroll and look at the ships and yachts moored here or take a tour of the harbor. Other sites of interest include a huge hourglass filled with amber instead of sand and a fountain that’s supposed to look like a wave. Sunday, 11 September 2011 Old Town Excursion

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours excursion of Liepāja Old Town. Looking southwest we have a view of a boat landing on the south side of the cannel next to the Tram Bridge and some of the buildings that face the cannel. We also have a view of Liepāja Holy Trinity Lutheran Cathedral. As we move to the west we came across a small garden with a view of the Promenade Hotel that was made from one of the warehouses the lined the cannel. Then moving to the east we come across the Ostmala Department Store. As we walk back to the hotel we can again see the music notes in the sidewalk and when we get to the Liepāja Holy Trinity Lutheran Cathedral, we can see a larger plaque denoting it is a Liepāja historical sight.

Sunday, 11 September 2011 New Town Excursion

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours excursion of Liepāja New Town. As we cross the Tramvaja tilts “Tram Bridge” we can see Europa City Hotel, which is a remodeled warehouse and on a hotel. As we walk down one of the streets in New Town, we came by a store front with old black and white pictures of Liepāja. One of the pictures shows a view of Tramvaja tilts “Tram Bridge” crossing the canal between Old Town and New Town with old sailing ships tied up along Liepāja Port. The next picture is and old picture of Rose Square. Moving on, we can see examples of old brick and wooden building that can be found through New Town. There are even old a banded warehouses along one street. As we move to Kaiju iela, we come to one of the many closed and a banded factories located through Liepāja since Latvia joined the European Union and forced to except European Union investors who moved the production of these factories to other parts of the Union and closing these Liepaja

Old Liepāja Cemetery “Old Liepāja kapsēta”

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Old Liepāja Cemetery “Old Liepāja kapsēta” located along Kaiju iela in Liepāja New Town. Old Liepāja kapsēta is divided into two parts with the newer part located on the north side of Kaiju iela and the older part located on the south side of Kaiju iela. As we enter the main entrance of Old Liepāja kapsēta located on the south side of Kaiju iela we can see that the front part of Old Liepāja kapsēta is well maintained. As we move towards to rear of the kapsēta the area is less maintained and the graves are much older and the headstones are falling over or have been vandalized. Still moving toward the rear of the kapsēta we can see weeds covering the graves. Located in the rear of the kapsēta we can see many graves that are dug inside the hillside. Located in this area is were the graves of the World War II German Soldiers that were killed or died during the war are to be buried. With all the weed covered

Hotel Libava

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Hotel "Libava" located at Vecā ostmala 29. The history of recreation centre "Libava" begins in faraway year 1772. The building where "Libava" is situated has gone through three reconstruction times and variants. In 1772, two perpendicular pavilions were built in both sides of Trade canal wooden bridge; they were directed towards the canal and provided for bridge guard and custom needs. The bridge was placed through the blocks of buildings and there was organized the traffic of drivers and walkers. In 1930, the next lifting bridge was built and also then the traffic to Liela iela passed through the two existing pavilions. In the end of 19th century, after the reconstruction of buildings the city council of Liepāja decided to establish so called "building of workers" in former pavilions. Raina Park – Site of the July 1941 Mass Murders and its Memorial

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to Raiņa Park the site of the July 1941 Mass Murders and its Memorial located at the north end of the Raiņa Park. The first murder operation took place on the first day of occupation, on 3 and 4 July 1941, when the Einsaztkommando shot a group of Jews along with other Latvian activists and Red Army POW’s in the anti-tank ditches in Rainis Park. The killings were carried out by Einsatzkommando 1a, under the command of SS-Obersturmfuhrer Fritz Reichert. Groups of victims “according to different sources, between 33 and 150 men” that apparently comprised of Jews and suspected political activists and Red Army POW’s were ordered to march in line along Brīvības iela to the two ditches previously dug by the Red Army, 100 and 200 meters in length, where they were shot. Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Liepāja Holy Trinity Lutheran Cathedral “Svētais Trīsvienības luterāņu katedrāle” ANNO 1742-1758 were we will see its breath taking interior located at Liela iela 9. It is possible to see unique and original masterpieces in the Liepāja Holy Trinity Lutheran Cathedral that have been preserved up to nowadays. Noteworthy just before the entrance into the cathedral there is the Liepāja Coat of Arms above the door aisle and the sculpture on the left side of the entrance. This is the symbol of Faith and it is depicted by a rococo style female image. The other sculpture is the symbol of Love, which has been dismantled and removed to the antechamber of the cathedral since 1996 when the restoration was done. This symbol like the symbol of Faith is depicted by a rococo female Image.

Saint Anna’s Lutheran Church

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Saint Anna’s Lutheran Church “Svētais Annas luterāņu baznīca” ANNO 1893, located at the corner of Kuršu laukums and Eduarda Veidenbauma iela. Although there has been a Saint Anne’s on this spot since the early 1500s, the current red brick neo-Gothic structure was created in 1893. “The soaring steeple reaches a height of 60m”, but the church’s main claim to fame is its impressive baroque altar painting that measures a whopping 5.8 by 9.7m - no small feat for Latvia whose Lutheran houses of worship usually lack the ornamentation of flashier Catholic churches. The nations’ third largest organ is also worth a look.

The expanding 19th century congregation had outgrown its small building, but had been denied a building permit for a new church so they just added onto the existing one creating the towering structure you now see. The interior is ornately decorated with a variety of scenes from the Bible.

The Church of Martin Luther of Jaunliepāja

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Church of Martin Luther of Jaunliepāja, located on Jelgavas iela in New Liepāja Latvia. The cornerstone for the Church of Martin Luther of Jaunliepāja was laid on 18 May 1914. The architect was K. E. Štrandmanis. The building if the church took 20 years, the work was suspended several times. On 8 June 1934, the church was consecrated, but the building has not really been completed to this very day. The design included a small central tower that has not been put up. A balcony has been attached to all four of the walls of the major hall. On the balcony above the entrance is the organ, and opposite it is the choir loft. On either side, there are seats for visitors. A simple altar is at the center. The lighting element at the center of the church is shaped like a cross and grants the room a solemn mood.

Statue of Hermes

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Statue of Hermes located at Liela iela 10. So-called “Logios Hermes” (Hermes,Orator). Marble, Roman copy from the late 1st century CE - early 2nd century CE after a Greek original of the 5th century BCE. Hermes; Greek “Ἑρμῆς” is the great messenger of the gods in Greek mythology and a guide to the Underworld. Hermes was born on Mount Cyllene in Arcadia. An Olympian god, he is also the patron of boundaries and of the travelers who cross them, of shepherds and cowherds, of the cunning of thieves, of orators and wit, of literature and poets, of athletics and sports, of weights and measures, of invention, and of commerce in general. His symbols include the tortoise, the rooster, the winged sandals, the winged hat, and the caduceus.

Līvas Cemetery “Līvas kapsēta”

Come join Liepāja Tours and “TheCeļotājs” visit to the Līvas kapsēta “Cemetery” located in the south part of Liepāja Old Town along Cenkones iela. As we enter the main entrance of Līvas kapsēta we see a dome chapel and to its left is a crypt. As we pan from the left to the right, we see well maintain graves. As we continue our walk through Līvas kapsēta, we can see even many more well maintained graves. Also you will see the graves of the pastors who came from Germany to bless the kapsēta in the early 1900’s. One being Pastor Rudolf Schoen 1847 – 1912 and the other pastor was Pastor prim. Eugen Kluge 1848 – 1920. While we were visiting Līvas kapsēta we had the pleaser of having a guided walk through Līvas kapsēta by Mareks Fūrmanis Līvas kapsēta Caretaker. Mr. Mareks Fūrmanis even took the time to show us the inside of the chapel and it history during the Nazi Occupation.

Rose Square “Rožu laukums”

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the Rose Square “Rožu laukums” located in the heart of Liepāja. Although the square is adjacent to the Tourist Information Centre, it is a popular spot to congregate this is the undisputed heart of Liepāja. It gained its name in 1910 when the city fathers decided to plant 500 rose bushes here. Walk in any direction from here and there’ll be something interesting to see or do. The sister city plaques that are found around the wall are not just plaques, each one is pointed in the direct of the sister city.

Liepāja Peter’s Market “Pētertirgus”

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to Liepāja Peter's Market “Liepājas Pētertirgus” located at Kuršu iela 5/7/9, Liepāja, Latvia Since the second half of the 17th century Kuršu laukums served as the city's main market, but in 1910 the Pētertirgus pavilion was built next door and has remained Liepāja's central trading venue to this day. Inside you'll find stunning architecture and a hygienic market that has lost some of its character due to the pressures of the modern era. Today you'll find stalls inside and out of this bustling complex, selling everything from furniture, pirated CDs, DVDs and local crafts to fruit, vegetables and slabs of meat. Outside you'll find flower and vegetable stalls as well as vendors selling local crafts and souvenirs.

Friday, 09 September 2011 Old Town Excursion

Come join “TheCeļotājs” and Liepāja Tours excursion of Liepāja Old Town. The first iela we come to is Zivju iela, which is Liepāja closed iela or area with many different shops and flower boxed on top of metal towers. As we walk along the iela we note there a music notes embedded in the paving bricks, which can be seen all over Old Town. If you follow the music notes, they will lead one to different historical buildings or areas if Liepāja history. As we move from Zivju iela to Tirgoņu iela we will come to a gray four story build with a stone decorated arch Tirgoņu iela 22 with plaques on each side of the doorway with one of them in English stating In this building Roberts and Johanna Seduls hid 11 Jews 1943 – 1945, thereby savīng their līves. “That’s why the name Roberts Seduls Will remaīn īn our memory. Liepāja Jewish World War II Memorial and Cemetery

Come join Liepāja Tours and “TheCeļotājs” visit to the Jewish World War II Memorial and Cemetery dedicated to those who were murdered by the invading Nazi Army in June 1941 located in the south part of Līvas kapsēta “Cemetery” located in the south part of Liepāja Old Town along Cenkones iela. The First Mass Grave Mass graves of the first group of Jewish victims, shot by SS-Einsatzkommando 1a under Reichert in Rainis Park on 03 July1941 and reburied in the Jewish cemetery a few days later Victims of Rainis Park Massacre Gravestone for 37 Jews “including 3 unknown ones” executed in Rainis Park on 03 July 1941 and reburied in the Jewish Cemetery several days later. The Soviet inscription says: "Eternal Glory to the Heroes Who Fell in the Battles for our Soviet Fatherland". True, many were members of the paramilitary Workers' Guard, but they were arrested and shot, not killed in combat.

German World War II Latvia Cemetery – Beberbeki Latvia

Come join “TheCelotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to German World War II Latvia Cemetery – Beberbeki Latvia located just outside Beberbeki in the middle of the forest this German War Cemetery. It is used to bring together the graves of the surrounding regions. There are now 2,427 graves in this cemetery. The names of 6,600 German soldiers who were buried in Riga but whose graves are covered with a civilian cemetery “2 Maza kapsēta” are written on columns. Also the names of 1200 POW’s who died are written on separate columns. The location of their graves is unknown.

White Cross Memorial and Cemetery in 2 Maza kapsēta

Come join “TheCelotājs” and Liepāja Tours visit to the White Cross Memorial and Cemetery located in 2 Maza kapsēta Riga Latvia. The White Cross Memorial and Cemetery is a small cemetery located inside the 2 Maza kapsēta and is dedicated to those who were deported in 1940 and 1941 to forced work camps under the Soviet Union occupation to the far regions of Siberia to never to return alive. Those who died were returned to Riga were they were reburied in this small cemetery dedicated to them. Located at one ended is a cross with a memorial plaque at its base and at the other end is a granite column with the name of those of the dead. Unfortunately this is all the information I can find on this cemetery.
