Off route on BLM 1103 a couple of miles south of the Hunter's Camping. Looking west and at a valley that the GDMBR goes through. That is Arroyo Chico to the right.
That is Cerro Ojo Del Frio (mesa of the cold spring). The GDMBR passes through this area as well. Looking more northerly than the last shot.
Cerro Ojo Del Frio. There is a spring at the base of the mesa that is about a mile from the Hunter's Camping, which is to the right of the picture.
If you look carefully you can make out pieces of CR 25 passing through this valley. This shot was taken by pointing the camera to the west. Ojo Frio would be to the right of this picture. Notice how the mesas in the background would line up if the shots were stitched together.
Cabazon from BLM 1103 in between the Hunter's Camping area and the north entrance to the Ignacio Chavez Special Management Area.
Bear Mouth from BLM 1103 (slightly off the GDMBR). Looking towards the southwest.
Now I am a little lower and you can clearly see pieces of CR 25 which the GDMBR uses at this point.
A cactis in bloom reminding us that this is high desert country.
That is Cerro Cuate (twins or close friends) with the two tops. Arroyo Chico is in the foreground in front of Cerro Cuate. You can barely make out the GDMBR as the road winds down and across Arroyo Chico.
Another view of Cerro Ojo Del Frio (spring at base) on route. This spring is too important to miss. For SOBO riders it is almost 30 miles to the next reliable water source at the BLM enclosure. In this country always filter and/or purify the water even if you take it from a faucet. It is not tested, so don't count on it to be safe for drinking without treatment.
Cerro Cuato (left), Cabezon (middle), Cerro Chafo (right)
So you want to take the alternate route instead? This shot is slightly off route a little ways up (south) on BLM 1103. That is Cabezon in the distance.
Bear Mouth from CR 25 on the GDMBR southbound (SOBO)
Cabezon from Hunters Camping area
Another shot of Cabezon looking north from Ignacio Chavez Grant looking north
One more shot of Cerro Cuate from Ignatio Chavez Grant looking north
El Dado from high plateau looking NW (way off route)
Top of Dado Canyon (way off route)
El Dado Canyon (upper end looking west - down) way off route
Off route, but beautiful! This is the south entrance.
I really enjoy it up here. You usually have it to yourself; if you don't count the cattle.
Off GDMBR, but on CDT
Ojo Indios in the Ignatio Chavez Grant. I was told I could drink right out of the spring. I suppose that would be true if I was tired of living. I chose to run it through my MSR Waterworks (not the Mini) filter with a Sweetwater pre-filter.
Sure thing, I'd drink straight out of that! It's water, right?
Tea anyone?
In contrast to the previous pictures of fresh and pure water, check out this straight up unaltered shot of the New Mexico sky taken at the Hunters Camping area!
